40# propane tank

I just bought a garage heater and went to fill an old 20# tank for it to find it was too old to fill. It was made in '95 and it sounds like you can't fill anything pre- '98. So instead of trying to get this updated, I'd rather put the money into a somewhat larger tank, but something I can still load/unload myself. Figured maybe you RV guys might have something that's been in your way. Thanks!

Another option you may have is a tank exchange type place. I'm not a huge fan of Blue Rhino, but AmeriGas can be found.

Just a thought.

I'm with FP. I'm not a Blue Rhino fan either, but for your old tank you can exchange it for a fresh Blue Rhino tank at many places. Then you have a modern tank that you can refill at your choice of locations. I bought my 40# tanks at Home Depot when I had to update my fiver tanks.

That was suggested when I tried to fill it. Is that something places like that expect? I guess I feel a little guilty by trading in a junk tank for a good one.

They do expect it. From what I understand, there's not much involved in changing the valve to an OPV (Overfill Protection Valve). My Dad had to have a 10 pounder converted several years ago, and it was only $10-15.

The local gas co said that they could retrofit the valve in there for me, but the reason the guy wouldn't fill it at Big R was the date that we stamped into the metal. So even if I fixed it, they still wouldn't fill it. I just think I'd rather put any money into a larger capacity tank. I have two 20# ers for the grill already. I don't really need a third.

But if I can't find a good deal on a 40#, I'll have to do something with this one.
