Thinking of trading truck for Excursion

My wife's van has hit 250k miles and it's time to start thinking about a replacement. With another child on the way (which will make for 5 total) I'm thinking of getting an Excursion for the extra seating.

If I do this I will sell the van off and trade my truck ('01 F350 CC LB PSD) in for the Excursion as I can't really justify having two large vehicles like that. I will strictly be looking at a diesel Excursion.

Should I go for a 6.0 Excursion or stick with a 7.3?
Any other things with the Excursion to think about?

Anyone out there looking to get rid of the Ex for a truck that would consider a trade?

I would stay away from the 6.0. Just too many problems IMO. And I have been extremely happy with my 7.3L X.

There are a couple of black Excursions for sale at a little used car lot on Hwy 34 in Loveland, just west of Sam's Club. People keep calling me to ask if one of them is mine.

There is really nothing big I can warn you about with the X. The power door lock actuators are known to go out, but that's also an SD problem.
Some people complain about the steering in Excursions, but I have not had a problem with mine - even with the lift.

Hmmmmm.....what else can I tell you? I just love mine. I just told Alan the other day that I will never sell it. I will just paint it when it needs it, and put a new motor in when it needs it.
160K+ and still chugging away. Drag races, sled pulls, towing, daily driving....my truck does it all.

What are the REAL issues with the 6.0? I know people were unhappy with them when they first arrived but are they as bad as the internet makes them out to be?

Did the 6.0 start in the Excursion in '04 as well?

I was hoping to get the quieter 6.0, since this will be my wife's vehicle, but I also don't want a $$ pit.

I'll have to go check out the black ones Shay. I'm not sure I want a black vehicle, as I hated keeping the black 'stang I had clean, but if they are a good deal I'll have to consider it.

I am with Shay, plus the 7.3L's are more common. There aren't many 6.0L out there IIRC. And it's been long enough that I don't remember the host of issues the 6.0L had. It's enough to say that it played a big part in putting a huge hurtin' on Ford. There are a few guys I know who had good luck with the first 6.0L's, but there are many more who had lots of trouble. The X's have more insulation, so inside the cab, they are probably 20% quieter than my PSD.

There can be a drone in the very back seat, but mine isn't bad with the Aero-Turbine muffler.

If you are looking at them, look at the luggage rack on top. There is a piece up there that screws into the stationary rack. If left on, it moves around a lot and scratches the crap out of the roof and even the side a little.
Also, one of my big side windows that vents is acting up right now. I just don't use it, since they rattle going down the road anyway.
The only other thing that is annoying is the back window that goes up is on little shock things. Mine won't stay up if the weather is really cold. When it's warm it works great, although I figure they will go out eventually because my Mustang back hatch shock things won't hold the hatch up anymore no matter what the weather. Alan gave me a piece of pipe that I stick under the hatch to hold it up when I am loading the back of the Stang car. LOL

But, really my truck is pretty much ten years old now, and for me these things are minor.

Do keep in mind that Excursions came out of the factory 2" lower than a Super Duty. I didn't like the look of it being so low, so that's why I went with the lift.

Black is a pain. I don't know if I would go with it again if I had the choice. I bought my truck used, so didn't get to really pick the color. I had just said I didn't want that light blue, but didn't mind the other colors that badly. I got a great deal on mine way back when, so could not pass it up.

I cannot remember if the Excursion came out with the 6.0 in 04 or 03, but I know that you could get either engine in that one year.

As far as the problems, I simply think that the lemons outnumbered the good ones. Yes, there are good ones out there, but are you willing to risk it? I believe for starters there were a lot of head gasket issues, and the 5R trans is not the greatest thing in the world to deal with if you modify the truck, at least coupled with the 6.0.
I'm sure others can chime in here, but I know that Ford realized the mistake they had made with the 6.0 and regretted putting it out there.
My husband has always said that he absolutely would not buy one, unless of course he was going to drop a CR in it. LOL He's such a Cummins punk now though.

Shay, You do know that is an easy fix, right?

same here

Thekid,

I'm doing the same thing. I have a 2002 F250 CC SB that I'll be selling to pick up an excursion. I'm only considering 7.3L, 4wd. The one I found is black (it's out of state) but seems to be a good deal. If everything works out should be here next week sometime...From what I've seen on craigslist, autotrader, etc a 4wd 7.3, depending on how many miles, seems to start around 11k...

No Terry, I don't know. Other than to replace those little shock things. I'm sure Alan knows how, but since he doesn't use the X that much it's not high on his "list". LOL

11K? Wow, that makes me sick. Mine is worth so much to me, so I know I will never be able to sell it.

If you are going to get rid of your truck, after you get the trade in value - let me know. I am looking for a superduty F-350 CC LB 4x4. I am in no hurry, but want a newer truck that I can transplant my drivetrain into...
